Kissing Cows: Dreaming of Becoming a Veterinarian

Jessica M.

My dream in life is to become a veterinarian. I realized this was the career for me when our fifth grade class at Mother Caroline Academy spent a week in the early spring at the farm in Vermont called, Farms for City Kids. We had SO much fun. At least I know I did!

We saw three calves get born! One was a girl and we named It Caroline. After the school’s name. (Now we have heard that she’s had a baby.) We learned how to teach the calves how to drink out of a bottle!! And we learned how to clean up a cow’s mess. (Yuk!). We also learned how to lead sheep from the pasture into a pen.

On the last day we all got awards and I got the “Future Farmer” award. When it was time to go I was sad, but inspired to do something in my life that had do with helping animals. So the first thing I thought of was becoming a veterinarian. It seemed fun and I thought I knew I would I have a job I would enjoy for the rest of my life — helping animals in need and making sure they live.

Now I am in seventh grade and we have been exploring careers and have visited people where they work. In April our after-school class went to the Franklin Park Zoo in Boston and we met one of the zoo’s veterinarians, Dr. Hayley Webster, at the Franklin Park Zoo. She is a zoologist and handles all animals. Mostly she helps with the ones with sickness and big illnesses.

She told me about all the education that she had to go through. The extra years of school and studying of science — four years of grad school and four years of vet school. Soon I became a bit hesitant about what I wanted to be. Could I do all those years of college and graduate school? Now I know what the answer is: Yes I can Do it because I will put my head into it and succeed.
